The purpose of this international workshop is to examine the varied
dimensions of American influence in the Mediterranean. The American
ethos is often linked with notions like "transparent administrative
practices" and "exemplary" democracy, which percolate into thought
patterns and into political, civil, and emotional practices. In
addition, such topics as the variety and scope of American
orientalism, the sources of the attraction to and rejection of
American hegemony in the Mediterranean, the application of economic
and management theories, the influence of the Protestant ethos and
scientific beliefs on the world of images in the region, consumer
culture, and popular culture will be examined.
Recent decades have seen the emergence of scholarly literature on the
infiltration of American values into the Mediterranean. At the same
time there is growing awareness of the influence of Mediterranean
traditions, including biblical heritage and Hellenistic culture, on
the beginnings of American civilization. There is nevertheless a
conspicuous lack of studies that deal with historical continuity and
the influence of the American presence in the region from the
eighteenth century to the present.
One of the workshop's goals is to facilitate scholarly and
interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and perceptions and to
contribute to the methodological and thematic inquiry into the
American presence over time.
Each participant will be asked to present a 20-30 minute paper, to be
followed by comments and notes from other participants – senior as
well as junior scholars. Limited financial support to some of the
participants is feasible.
The working language of the conference is English.
