London, England, July 19, 2008 His Royal Highness The Earl of Wessex today took part in a ceremony to repatriate the Sir Samuel Steele Collection. The colorful ceremony took place on the steps of Canada House and featured a Mounted Ceremonial Contingent including a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and two members from the Household Cavalry.
The Collection was accepted by the High Commissioner, and will be returned to Canada. Following the ceremony was a reception where enthusiastic guests were treated to a preview of collection items and brief remarks by HRH The Earl of Wessex, Canadian High Commissioner James Wright and University of Alberta Chancellor, Dr. Eric Newell.
Steele (1849-1919) was a celebrated member of the North-West Mounted Police, the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians), and a major factor in the military and policing history of Western Canada. The University of Alberta together with Glenbow Museum will preserve the contents of this historically important collection. When made available publicly for research and scholarship, these materials are expected to revitalize the history of early settlement, policing and Canada's major military campaigns. It will also significantly supplement works already published.
