ALAMAT: 1st International Conference on Myths and Symbols (1st ICOMS)
Theme: “Flood Stories, Lost Lands, and Drowned Continents”
Date: November 26-28, 2008
Venue: Tambunting Hall, Museum of the Filipino People (National Museum), Agrifina Circle, Rizal Park
Organizers: UP Manila Centennial Committee and the National Museum, Sentro ng Wikang Filipino-Manila,
UPM CAS Alumni Society, UPM College of Arts & Sciences, Bahay Nakpil-Bautista Museum, and the Sanghibla

Rationale:
• There is a great need to rediscover and disseminate the significance of ancient myths and symbols in contemporary life for the values and meanings they indirectly encode, express and shape--having sprung from the unconscious, creative depths of humanity
• There is a need for a forum where studies on myths and symbols with the timely motifs of the great flood, lost lands, and drowned continents in the Philippines and world mythology are given focus
• There is a need to consolidate, evaluate, and disseminate all the studies and researches so far made on this theme by scholars, and see how they can be used for myth-making, nation-building, as well as for the renewal, transformation, healing and empowerment projects / programs of the peoples of
Asia, the Pacific region, and the world.
• There is a need to form community-based museums (ALAMAT Museums) to collect, compile, study, publish, design teaching modules, and create multi-media productions for myths, legends and symbols
• There is a need to have a local, national and international society of myth and symbol studies in the service of society, and human welfare & development.
Conference Features:
MAIN SPEAKER: Dr. Stephen James Oppenheimer (Green College and School of Anthropology, Oxford University) –
author of “Eden in the East: The Drowned Continent of Southeast Asia” and many other books
GUEST SPEAKER: Dr. Wilhelm Solheim II (American archeologist; proponent of the “Nusantao” hypothesis)
CLOSING SPEAKER: Mr. Paul Kekai Manansala (USA) – journalist; independent researcher; author of “The Naga Race”,
“Quests of the Dragon and Bird Clan”, “Sailing the Black Current: History of the Ancient Philippine Argonauts in
Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and Beyond”
Panel Discussants: Selected representatives from myth and symbols scholars, environmentalists, government officials, diplomatic corps, leaders in healing and saving the earth movement; Paper Presenters--24 speakers; Pre-Conference Story-telling Workshop; Festival Nights; Poster Exhibits;
