The South Carolina State Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies, a scholarly forum for interdisciplinary work in the humanities, social sciences, visual arts, and education, is seeking previously unpublished articles on the broad topic of education. Although all submissions are welcome, we are especially interested in the research of faculty members at land grant and minority-serving institutions.
Possible topics may include (but are not limited to):
Technology: Our so-called “Millennial” student population’s literacy has been shaped by exposure to new media. How has this exposure shaped our students’ notions of what constitutes a text, appropriate grammar, and how information should be organized and disseminated? In what ways have you addressed these changes in your classroom? Are you comfortable with technology? How do you use it in the classroom? Do you receive the funding and training you need to learn about and buy technology? What do you do when technology (cell phones, MP3 players, laptops) comes into your classroom?
The Cost of Education: Higher education costs have escalated over the past five years, and many students graduate with staggering amounts of debt. What impact (if any) does the cost of education have on what happens in your classroom and students’ attitudes toward what you do in the classroom? What pressures do educators and institutions face as a result of higher costs?
Accountability & Ideas about the Purpose of Education: As the cost of education has increased, so has scrutiny of what happens in the classroom. Education as an investment has taken on a more literal meaning as students and parents think more explicitly about education in terms of what financial gains will accrue to the student as a result of his or her education, and as departments and programs face pressures to produce majors and graduates to maintain their funding. What impact have the ideas of the student as customer and education as a financial investment had on our notions of education?
Generational Values: What differences (if any) do you note between your values and the values of the students in your classroom? What impact do these differences or similarities have on pedagogy?
Political, Social, and Historical Context: Legal status of affirmative action, the Academic Bill of Rights, the Spellings Commission Report on Higher Education, violence on college campuses, multicultural curriculum, diversity (or lack thereof) in hiring faculty and staff, and affordability of education for needy students.
Representations of Education in Popular Culture, Mass Media, and Literature
