International Conference On India-US Relations: From Estranged Democracies to Engaged Democracies; Addressing the opportunities and challenges of globalization for Enhanced Cooperation;November 6-7th,2008 at Shillong,India
Even though US and India share abiding beliefs in democracy and concern for human rights, being large multi ethnic and multi religious nations, yet the relations between the two countries have not been as close or friendly as could be expected.
It proves that mere sharing of beliefs in democracy and freedom for people with different beliefs and long held traditions is not enough to boost friendly relations, because the interests of the two countries are either different or perceived to be different.
Indo US relations have rather become much closer as Indo-US relations have only entered a new phase as a result of enhanced cooperation and consultation between the two countries, with economic cooperation between the US and India continuing at an accelerated pace and likely to grow substantially in the coming years. Likewise military cooperation also has increased. However with the US continuing to advocate the stability of the Indian sub-continent, including a lessening of tensions over the Kashmir issue, and a renunciation of nuclear weapons proliferation and testing, even as the interests of the two countries are becoming complementary which bodes well for friendly India US relations in the near future, there continues to be concern and even fear about its consequences for regional and world security and for well-being in general.
In order to sustain and consequently improve this existing Indo US relations into the next millennium, it is of utmost priority to critically examine, by the practioners of diplomacy, academicians and political commentators and researchers, the tenuous relations between two countries till now and identify factors including the recently signed nuclear deal that have led to friendly and not so friendly relations as well as factors that have the potential to create long range hostility, so as to cement ties between the two of the great strategic powers .
Title of Technical Sessions:Some of the technical sessions identified to be discussed and analyzed during the conference on Indo-US relations: From estrangement to engagement;are as follows
a)Changing nature of Indo-US relations and efforts to develop a stable and co-operative relationship
b)Potential for closer INDO-US Ties: The New Millennium Perspectives
