International Conference - June 3-5, 2008 - University of Strasbourg, France
"The Regulation of Pluralism in the Religions of the Book"
sponsored by the Centre de Sociologie des Religions et d’Ethique Sociale (CSRES) of Marc Bloch University, Strasbourg, France.
The Conference discusses the strategies used by different groups within a given scriptural tradition to respond to the challenge of religious plurality.
How did the claims to truth that characterize Judaism, Christianity and Islam develop? How have these religious traditions administered the heterogeneity of their Scriptures and doctrines? What latitude have they granted to internal criticism? How do they define orthodoxy, heterodoxy and heresy? To what extent do their understanding of the world and vision of history recognize the existence of other groups?
The conference engages with these topics from three perspectives:
1. Philosophical and Anthropological Approaches to the Religions of the Book.
2. The Regulation of Religious Pluralism within each of the religious traditions of the Book.
3. The Regulation of External Religious Pluralism.
