Race, Culture, and Social Justice: Lydia Maria Child and her Call for Change
40th Anniversary Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association
Feb. 26-March 1, 2009
Boston, Massachusetts
From her abolitionist writings to the founding of the first children’s literature magazine in the United State, Lydia Maria Child dedicated her considerable talents to advocating equality and justice. Child’s texts use concepts of racism and passing to subvert the notion that skin color alone could be used to measure the worth of another human being. This panel seeks to explore Child’s works and help them emerge from the shadows of the fathers of the American Literary Renaissance; Child’s writings are an integral a part of the Transcendental message that helped shape a portion of the American literary landscape and the American identity.
