Cycling historian David Herlihy, author of Bicycle: The History (Yale University Press, 2004), will present a slide lecture tracing the rich, but largely unknown, history of bicycling in New York City. He will recount the bicycle crazes of the 1860s and 1890s, the Six Day Races held at Madison Square Garden, the pioneering campaigns by bikers -- not motorists -- for paved roads, and much more. The lecture will feature many rare and little-know historical images. May is Bike Month in New York City. Celebrate by exercising your mind as well as your body!
