In 1969, the Canadian government released its policy proposal for Indian Affairs entitled Statement of the Government of Canada on Indian Policy, popularly known as the White Paper, articulating a plan to drastically alter the Canada/First Nations relationship. Among the proposed changes: repealing the Indian Act, abrogating the treaties and abolishing reserves.
A firestorm of negative responses followed as First Nations leaders, individuals and the Canadian public voiced their dissatisfaction at the Liberal government's chosen policy orientation. This outcry led to the policy paper's eventual withdrawal in 1971.
Set for publication in 2009, the Native Studies Review will mark the 40th anniversary of the White Paper's tabling with a special issue intended to assess and reflect upon the past four decades of Canadian Indian Affairs policies.
To be considered for publication, please email your paper for peer review or your commentary to nativestudies.review@usask.ca by December 1, 2008.
