The West and Beyond: Historians Past, Present and Future. A conference to be held at the University of Alberta, June 19 - 21, 2008. Sponsored by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Athabasca University and the University of Alberta, NICHE, Historical Society of Alberta, and Canada West Foundation. The conference will reflect on and assess the writing and teaching of historians of Western Canada of the past and present, showcase the work of a new generation of scholars and chart new directions for the future. There is particular emphasis on the diversity of the social landscape of the West, the themes of memory and commemoration, environmental history and the modern West. Special events include a banquet in honour of the contribution of L.G. Thomas to the teaching and writing of Western Canadian history, an evening at the Royal Alberta Museum featuring live music from Edmonton singer Maria Dunn as well as a presentation on the remarkable story of Edmonton's Great Western Garment factory, and walking tours.
