CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS: OUDENARDE 1708 – a commemoration in prose and verse of the 300th anniversary of the battle of Oudenarde
WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
SHORT SCHOLARLY ESSAYS, IN ENGLISH (or possibly French?): on any aspect of the battle of Oudenarde itself, or historical and literary responses to it (especially, but not only, Neo-Latin and vernacular verse produced in 1708 or thereafter).
- also essays on the rest of the campaign of 1708 (especially the siege of Lille);
- we would also consider proposals relating to the war of the Spanish Succession more widely (especially if focused on the Low Countries), or on Malplaquet (1709), or on the city of Oudenarde more generally (including events there in 1658 and 1668).
NEW VERSE, IN ANY LANGUAGE, reflecting on any aspect of Oudenarde specifically, or more generally on the events of 300 years ago. Neo-Latin verse is especially welcome, along with English, but all languages will be considered: non-English verse, though, must be accompanied by an English translation or summary, to ensure that it is (at least partly) accessible to an English-speaking readership.
The intention is to produce a similarly varied and stimulating collection of poems and essays as published at the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the battle of Ramillies (see http://perswww.kuleuven.be/~u0044197/BHP/). The book will be published in December 2008 (within the calendar year of the 300th anniversary).
