The Jewish Community Center of St. Petersburg, the Russian Institute for the History of the Arts, and the Composers' Union of St. Petersburg are pleased to announce the international conference "Jewish Professional Music in Russia: Its Formation and Development" to be held October 27-29, 2008. The conference will be dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the founding in St. Petersburg of the Society for Jewish Folk Music (1908-1922).

Historians, music scholars, and folklorists are invited to participate in this conference. Papers and presentations can be focused both directly on the history of the Society for Jewish Folk Music and on the wider spectrum of questions in the history and theory of Jewish music. The conference languages are Russian and English.

Applications and paper abstracts (no more than one page) should be sent to the organizing committee no later than September 1, 2008. The organizing committee will announce acceptances no later than September 15.

The conference will also feature an exhibition of documents and other materials on the history of the Society for Jewish Folk Music in St. Petersburg/Petrograd, a set of special jubilee concerts that will present the music of the composers associated with the Society, and other public cultural events.

The organizing committee plans to publish the proceedings of the conference as the third volume of the series "On the History of Jewish Music in Russia" (the first two volumes were published in St. Petersburg in 2001 and 2006).
