We are soliciting both scholarly and literary essays of 20-25 pages (visual arts projects and photo essays also welcomed) that examine the ways the South-Eastern United States have always been and remain at the crossroads of a national and transnational world. Exploring the multicultural influences that have shaped this area – historically, in relation to Caribbean and Mexican economic and social contacts; culturally, in relation to Southern culture and art and its extension throughout the hemisphere and the world; and currently, in relation to immigration and the changing economies of the area – this special issue will open up new ways of thinking about the South. Moreover, it will reveal the long trajectory of global contacts that are often overlooked because of national, sectarian conceptions of the area’s history and demographics.
Deadline for submission of abstracts is June 15, 2008.
Deadline for complete submissions is October 1, 2008.
We welcome all queries, please forward them to Guest Editor Luis A. Iglesias at Luis.Iglesias@usm.edu
