For the next issue of Sparta we would like to call for papers directed at two very different periods of Spartan history.
The first is the time of the early Messenian Wars and the foundation of the Spartan constitution by Lycurgus, that mysterious figure who the oracle puzzled over: I know not whether to declare you human or divine - Yet I incline to believe, Lycurgus, that you are a god. (Herodotus I.65)
The second period covers Sparta's dealings with the Romans and the eventual formation of the Roman province of Macedonia, from where Achaea was controlled. In addition papers might consider later views of Sparta held by the Romans and other peoples after c200BC.
