The May 9th symposium will provide a venue for the discussion, performance, and examination of research on intercultural communication and exchange between China and the West via music during the 16th – 20th centuries . Eight participants are scheduled to present their research highlighting themes such as musical exchange (textual and visual representations), performance and ritual, gift exchange, interaction between and collaboration among Chinese and Western musicians, use of music as a form of intercultural communication, composition, and education and music training. The symposium will be held on Friday, May 9, 2008 from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the University of San Francisco. A keynote public lecture/performance featuring Drs. Peter Allsop and Joyce Lindorff with guest artist Kati Kyme will be held, Thursday, May 8, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco.
