The purpose of this symposium is to explore how masculinity has shaped the culture and history of the American South from colonial times to the present. It aims to highlight the importance of masculinity as a category of analysis, and invites scholars to reflect on how masculinity has intersected with class, race and power to structure social relationships between blacks, whites and Native Americans throughout the history of the South.
