“The [Great] Depression marked a crisis in values and a permanent shift in power everywhere. The Illinois scene was a microcosm of the national story,” wrote historian Richard Jensen. Despite this, scholars have devoted scant attention to the Depression and New Deal in the land of Lincoln. No single monograph has been devoted to the study of the topic. To mark the 75th Anniversary of the New Deal, the History Department at Eastern Illinois University in conjunction with the Barry D. Riccio History Fund and Coles County Historical Society announce a symposium on the New Deal in Illinois to be held October 9, 2008, on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL.
Proposals for papers addressing any aspect of the New Deal in relation to the state of Illinois or issues relating to any aspect of social, economic, political, cultural, or environmental issues in Illinois during the 1930s are welcome. For consideration, please submit a one-page paper abstract and a one-page c.v. to:
Dr. Edmund F. Wehrle

Or submit electronically to: efwehrle@eiu.edu
