Call for Papers: 3rd Annual Conference of the ECSA-C Young Researcherís Network, 25-27 September 2008, Edmonton, Alberta.
Implicated in a variety of power relations that reinforce its presence on the global stage as an economic and political force, the European Union (EU) faces new challenges that it must address and resolve if it is to continue to be relevant. As the EU institutionalizes and extends its authority within one domain, new contingencies surface somewhere else and question this new found capacity to govern. This conference aims to create an interdisciplinary arena that will foster meaningful exchanges, at once theoretical, epistemological, and empirical, to interrogate this process of maturation.
The Young Researcherís Network (YRN), working in conjunction with the European Community Studies Association-Canada (ECSA-C), is organizing a series of panels for graduate students and young scholars (up to five years after their PhD) at the 7th Biennial ECSA-C Conference in Edmonton, Alberta. The intention is to stimulate an exchange between future leaders in the field of European Studies through a mentorship programme that connects junior academics with senior scholars in their field of expertise.
The themes for these panels are:
1) New Foreign Policy Challenges and Canada-EU relations
2) Canadian and European Approaches to International Economic Relation
3) Social Policies and Labour Markets in Canada and Europe
4) Immigration, Citizenship, and Multiculturalism
5) Governance in the European Union
6) Enlargement, Neighbourhood policies, and Nationalism.
Interested young scholars are invited to submit a paper proposal (250-500 words) by April 7, 2008to Daniel Preece at email@example.com. Contributions are welcome in either French or English, and submissions should include a short bio with affiliation and detailed contact information (including email address). In addition, papers presented at these panels will be considered for publication in the Review of European and Russia Affairs (www.europeanandrussianaffairs.com). Paper proposals may be considered after the deadline if space is still available.
Travel and accommodation costs for participation at this conference may be partly covered, depending upon an EU grant administered through ECSA-C. Invited participants who would like to apply for travel grants can contact the YRN office for more information.
All papers and essays will be peer-reviewed on the basis of scholarship, quality of research and relevance to the research themes. A committee of senior and junior scholars will select the best papers and will invite those selected to participate in the conference.
