Bethel University (St. Paul, MN) will host the 2009 Lilly Fellows Program regional research conference on March 19-21, 2009. The goal of this conference is to provide scholars from all traditions an opportunity to explore the many dimensions of the pietist heritage, with a view to understanding the ongoing relevance of the "pietist impulse" for contemporary problems and questions across disciplines. We invite scholars and practitioners to propose papers or panel sessions on several issues, including:
* Historical and contemporary traditions of Pietism (e.g., classical and radical forms of European Pietism, denominational heritage in the United States, critical studies of key Pietists)
* Pietism as transformational Christianity (e.g., themes in Pietist spirituality and experiential Christianity, religious psychology, the individual and the community in Pietism)
* Pietism and the life of the mind (e.g., intellectual histories of Pietism, Pietist influences on higher education and Christian scholarship, Pietist contributions to theology and biblical studies)
* Pietism, missions, and social reform (including movements for social and economic justice, missionary activities, ecumenical cooperation, radical and conservative politics, gender equality)
* Pietist expressions in arts, music, and literature
Abstracts should be received by October 1, 2008, and should be 500-700 words with full contact information (name, institutional affiliation, mailing and e-mail address).
