In the wake of the laboratory revolution, human beings have become 'objects' of experimental practices and scientific testing procedures. Given the constitutive role of experiments in contemporary life sciences, the aim of the conference is to encourage greater historical and epistemological reflection on human experiments. We intend to break open the rigid dichotomy between 'human experiments' and 'therapeutic trials', between 'morally acceptable' and 'unacceptable' kinds of experimentation. Drawing on case studies from different scientific fields and geographic areas, we will analyze and discuss the status of human beings as sites of knowledge for self-experimentation, inoculation, and pharmaceutical trials.
