This joint conference of the African Studies Association in Germany (VAD) and the Swiss Society for African Studies (SGAS/SSEA) is organised by the Centre for African Studies Basel and the Arnold-Bergstraesser-Institute in Freiburg im Breisgau. During four days scholars from North and South discuss the current developments in Africa and the state of research on the continent. The theme of the conference is the economic, political, social and cultural significance of frontiers and passages. The sessions are structured in four thematic sections:
Environmental change: global processes, local effects
Between times and spaces: the negotiation of culture
Passages and transitions: the re-configuration of the social
Barriers and frontiers: the transformation of politics
