Georgia State University invites proposals for papers and participation at a multi-disciplinary conference on the comparative study of Democracy and Extremism, to be held in Atlanta on June 12-13, 2008. The conference will feature panels that seek answers to the enduring puzzle of how democracies cope with the paradox of being asked to tolerate the intolerant in their midst. This paradox drives theoretical, empirical, and policy-relevant research on modern democracy, including studies of legal restraints on extremism, the sociological underpinnings of extremist groups, democracy promotion through civic education, media campaigns against intolerance, and the special challenges of promoting democratic tolerance in urban settings. We welcome proposals from research scholars and advanced graduate students on issues related to these topics. Send paper/panel proposals and requests to serve as panel discussant and/or chair by March 28 to Dr. William Downs, Democracy and Extremism Conference, polwmd@langate.gsu.edu.
