Call for papers/expression of interest
CANADA AND ASIA: 150 YEARS OF TRANS-PACIFIC RELATIONS
Expressions of interest are invited for a series of panels on Canada-Asia relations at the Canadian Asian Studies Association conference, Nov. 13-16, 2008 in Waterloo. (The CASA call for papers follows.)
2008 marks the anniversary of several milestones in Canada-Asia relations. It is 150 years since the BC gold rush brought Asian immigrants to British North America, 100 years since the continuous passage law that effectively excluded migrants from India, 80 years since Canada and Japan established diplomatic relations, and 40 years since Pierre Trudeau announced plans for Canada to recognize China. We welcome papers examining diplomatic, trade, development, migration, missionary/religious, and NGO connections across the Pacific over the past 150 years.
If interested, please send a paper title and a short one-paragraph description by March 13 to David Webster, david.webster@utoronto.ca, and John Meehan, john.meehan@utoronto.ca
