University-Community Engagement
While the concept and practice of university-community engagement are not new, institutions of higher learning and the communities in which they are located are increasingly examining and undertaking mutually beneficial collaboration as a way to address pressing societal issues. More and more universities are even establishing units that have fostering university-community engagement as their specific mission.
Continuing education has been and continues to be central to
university-community engagement. Indeed, in the October, 2006, CAUCE Bulletin, Wes Koczka, then President of CAUCE,
advocated for a national university-community engagement strategy, having observed the following: “As learning institutions, we are expected to create opportunities for our citizens to engage with our institutions in a meaningful, thoughtful, and purposeful manner.”
Continuing Studies at Western, the host of the 55th Annual
Conference of CAUCE, invites continuing education instructors / researchers / administrators, business / civic leaders, members of community organizations, and student leaders – as well as other stakeholders – to the CAUCE 2008 Conference at the Hilton London in London, Ontario, for a timely discussion of university-community engagement.
