We are seeking contributions for an innovative collection of essays analyzing how African American masculinity has been practiced and imagined in American history and literature from the colonial period through World War II.

Our goal is to have historians and literary scholars share topics and sources in a series of paired chapters chronicling the development, representation, and contest over African American masculinities. Several university presses have expressed interest in the project, and we are seeking abstracts in order to provide a more concrete framework to publishers.

Please send 300 word abstract, brief CV, and 3-5 sentence biographical statement to pcaster_at_uscupstate.edu and tbuckner48602_at_troy.edu. We have extended the deadline until: April 1, 2008.

Following acceptance, essays of 7,000 - 8,000 words should be submitted July 15, 2008. Contributors will meet at a symposium in Spartanburg, South Carolina fall 2008 to respond to one another’s essays.
