WRITING THE SELF MODES OF SELF-PORTRAYAL IN THE CULTURAL TEXT
The 10th Annual Conference of the English Department of the University of Bucharest will be held between 5 7 June, 2008.
Papers are invited in the following areas:
British and Commonwealth Literatures
American Literature
Cultural Studies
Please note that the papers should address the following general topics: self and authenticity; the (de)construction of the self; self and (multiple) identities; pathologies of the self; the self in the information/ consumer age.
Possible topics:
Sources of the self: The developing modern, the emerging postmodern in the Republic of modern selves; Cultural battles and the retrieval of the self; Interpretation and Construction: the selfs textual/textural/contextual connection
Cultural episodes: Modern culture in the landscape of moral good/ Writing beyond the moral visions/ Why the escape from history and the self?
Cultural typologies and beyond: Canonical self-portrayals of Western culture and the writing revolutions; Scandalous romantic selves assessed: from the new to the radical cultural action; Assessing the (trans)Atlantic cultural texts in the age of the postcolonials; Writing the everyday self;
Centres, channels, challenges in cultural writing: Techniques of self-criticism in portraying the (late) modern/post-modern culture; Writing and re-writing the cultural self as a source for cultural history and cultural anthropology; Writing the multicultural self in the media.
You are invited to submit proposals for 20-minute presentations or panels (60 min.) on the above-mentioned topics.

The conference fee of 40 Euro (to be paid upon arrival)includes folders, lunch, coffee breaks and refreshments for two days. A selection of papers will be published in University of Bucharest Review.
