The Society for American Music 34th Annual Conference in San Antonio, Texas, 27 February-2 March 2008, hosted by Trinity University.
The conference will take place at the Historic Menger Hotel, adjacent to the Alamo and the famous San Antonio Riverwalk. Details for the conference may be found at: www.american-music.org. Online registration is available using PayPal or electronic check (through US bank).
There will be a number of papers and sessions devoted to not simply “Spanish-speaking” music, but to topics integrating those interests with other long-term concerns: musical authenticity, preservation, and cooperation that extend beyond borders of the contintental U.S. To set the tone of the location and conference, there will be a plenary session, “Music in New Spain,” in addition to influential research on topics such as “Pan-American Music Making” and “Transnational Experiences at the U.S.-Mexico Border,” and key figures such as Revueltas, Ginastera, Xavier Cugat, Bob Wills, and Celia Cruz.
We hope you will join us at this important conference open to all with an interest in American music, and look forward to welcoming you to San Antonio.
