For some time now I have been working on the genocidal aspects of China's Taiping Rebellion [1851-1864] particularly through eyewitness accounts. I would like to propose a panel for the AHA's 2009 Annual Meeting in New York City with the working title of "Genocide, Modernity, and the Non-Western Experience," looking at the relationship among expanded definitions of genocide, its relationship to concepts of modernity, and case studies from outside the European and North American historical experience. Papers covering any aspects of these areas would be welcome, especially those that cover events during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
