Beyond Academe, the website designed to educate historians about opportunities outside of the academy, has recently been updated to include new information and new links.
Beyond Academe has been profiled on NPR, in The Village Voice and on the career center web sites of universities ranging from Harvard to Berkeley. Perspectives described the site as offering “practical advice and useful information for finding a non-academic job. The web site also seeks to address the major issues that face non-academic historians and to dispel some of the more pernicious myths academic historians believe about the non-academic world.”
Along with updating the site, Beyond Academe is involved in a panel session at the AHA. Reflecting the belief that all historians should be educated about careers both in and outside the academy, panel members include both academics and non-academics. Panel members will provide a frank discussion of the benefits and drawbacks of non-academic and academic careers along with detailed information about how historians can find jobs which fit their needs.
The panel (This Historian’s Life) is scheduled for Saturday, January 5th at 2:30 PM in the Diplomat Ballroom of the Omni Hotel. We hope to see you there!
