The rich cultural heritage and history of African Americans in Western Pennsylvania has significance beyond the region of the three rivers. Historically people of African decent have lived in the region since the mid-18th century. They became founders of churches, schools, and other institutions that helped sustain and enrich the lives of African Americans. They were activists fighting for their brethren’s liberation from bondage and contributed to the development of the industrial economy that gave greater life to the region.
