Call for papers: Papers are invited for a collected volume Emotions in Literature edited by An Sonjae (Sogang University) and Francis So (National Sun Yat-sen University). Emotions constitute an inseparable part of all literary works. For example, in antiquity Homer's Iliad begins with Achilles's wrath while Aristotle narrows down his discussion of tragedy in terms of pity and fear and in contemporary literature Derek Walcott transposes the Aegean war cry into his "A Far Cry from Africa." Even in non-dramatic poetry one is often dealing with modes of emotion, although they may either be in a milder or more affecting form. Often, literary explications of emotion go deep into philosophical dimensions: from Thomas Aquinas through Sartre, emotion has been treated at great length and without specifically referring to any particular literary text. Indeed, philosophically, emotion can be a field in its own right. To the psychologist, however, emotions differ from feelings and in recent decades these notions have claimed the attention of neuroscientists. With recent reevaluations of the concept of "literature" many more approaches to emotion have come into being and are investigated in scholarship. Emotions in Literature intends to attract new work dealing with various aspects of the topic addressing the volume's theme in a wide variety of disciplines including history, literary studies, (comparative) cultural studies, sociology, philosophy, etc. Interdisciplinary papers are particularly welcome. The volume is intended to be published in the Shaker Publisher series of Books in Comparative Culture, Media, and Communication Studies
