Lecture: The Other Celestial Charts
Saturday, December 1, 2007
1:00 p.m.
Speaker: Anna Friedman Herlihy
When most people think of celestial charts they envision a starry sky with decorative constellation figures. Sometimes one might think of a Moon map or a solar system diagram. However, many other lesser-known celestial charts were created over the centuries by clever mapmakers eager to make astronomical information more understandable via a visual format. Focusing on the Adler's collection, this illustrated lecture will discuss, among others, charts that track the paths of comets across the sky, solar and lunar eclipse maps, and star charts for locating the pole star or orienting a scientific instrument.
Free with museum admission. Tickets available at the museum Box Office on the day of lecture.
