Rethinking America in Global Perspective: An NEH Summer Institute for College and University Teachers at the Library of Congress, June 16-July 11, 2008.
Applications are invited from two- and four-year college teachers from all humanities disciplines for an NEH Summer Institute on the topic, "Rethinking America in Global Perspective." This institute is sponsored by the American Historical Association and the National History Center, and hosted by the Library of Congress. With the aim of internationalizing American history at the college level, it will bring together teachers and scholars for four weeks of research and discussion at the Library of Congress.
The institute will cover American history from the pre-contact era to the present in its continental, hemispheric, and transoceanic contexts. Its directors are John Gillis of Rutgers University (emeritus) and Carl Guarneri of St. Mary's College of California. Guest faculty include Alan Dawley, Laurent Dubois, Donna Gabaccia, Eliga Gould, Paul Kramer, Elizabeth Mancke, Charles Mann, and Penny von Eschen. All fellows will receive a stipend of $3000 and access to the major research institutions in Washington. Fellows will explore individual research topics and participate in discussions of lectures, common readings, and curriculum development.
