California State University, Fresno, the Central Valley Institute for Regional and Historical Studies, and the African American Museum of Fresno invite proposal submissions for individual academic papers to be presented at the “Beyond the City Limits: The Rural African American Experience in the West,” April 25-26, 2008.
Through this conference we hope to deepen our understanding of African American life in farming communities and small towns in the West’s hinterlands. This is an excellent opportunity for faculty, graduate students, and others doing research in this field or related fields to present work and receive feedback from peers.
We are seeking proposals on any historical topic or period. Interdisciplinary work is welcome. Suggested sub-themes for the consideration of contributors:
Allensworth and Black Townships
Black Okies & Exodusters
Migratory Farm Labor
African Americans and Extractive Industries
African American Women in the Rural West
Slavery in the West
The Antebellum South goes West
Proposals should include a 300 word abstract and a short CV (Microsoft Word 97-2003 or RTF format, only), indicating your fields of academic interests. Please indicate whether your presentation requires special equipment (projector, AV). Deadline for proposals is February 15, 2008.
