Abstract: The discussion will survey some of the Japanese painters who studied with Hu Gongshou (1823-1886) in Shanghai with a focus on the controversial career of Yasuda Rozan (1830-1883). After seven years in Shanghai, Rozan achieved almost instantaneous acclaim and wealth in Tokyo. Yet his abrupt death in 1883 was eventually followed by a wave of criticism claiming that he was a careless painter who merely imitated his teacher unlike other Japanese literati who maintained the "correct" transmission of literati ideals. A comparison of Rozan's work with that by other Japanese students of Hu reveals the complexity of the mixed reception of his style in the Meiji and Taisho periods.
