Women Authors as “Writing Minds”
Strategies of Authority in the Memoirs of
Mary McCarthy and Elizabeth Hardwick
Wednesday, October 24, 5 p.m. • Reinsch Library, Main Campus
Dr. Bess Fox, MU assistant professor of Literature
and Language, will provide insight into the writings
of Mary McCarthy and Elizabeth Hardwick, who saw
the role of “professional writer” as incompatible with
the ethics of a materialistic middle-class culture and
the role of women within such a culture. She will
discuss how they presented themselves as “writing
minds” to de-emphasize their femininity and establish
their legacy as important American authors.
RSVP: (703) 284-5902 • www.marymount.edu
Following the program, faculty and staff
will be available to discuss Marymount's
graduate programs in Humanities and
Literature & Language. There will also be
