“LIBERTY AND FREEDOM DURING THE CIVIL WAR ERA”

A graduate student history conference to be held on the campus of The Pennsylvania State University on February 8–9, 2008

CALL FOR PAPERS

The graduate students of The Pennsylvania State University’s George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center announce the second annual Richards Center graduate student conference on the Civil War Era (roughly the 1830s through 1880). The Richards Center is committed to the integrated and comprehensive study of the Civil War Era. We especially welcome papers that focus on freedom in relation to African Americans, women, workers, and soldiers, as well as the transformation of law and the Constitution.

Prospective participants are asked to submit a one-page abstract and current C.V. no later than November 15, 2007. The abstract should clearly express the author’s argument and potential historiographical significance. Those invited to participate will be notified by December 1, 2007. Invited participants must submit a preliminary version of the 10–12 page (20 minute) paper to be presented by January 15, 2008.

The two-day conference will begin on Friday, February 8, and continue through Saturday, February 9. Dr. William Blair, editor of Civil War History and director of the Richards Civil War Era Center, will offer opening remarks. Each session will be followed by the commentary of a Richards Center scholar and an opportunity for discussion among the presenters, commentators, and audience. Snacks will be provided. In addition, the Richards Center will host a banquet for presenters on Friday evening.

Travel stipends of $250 will be awarded to each invited speaker. Invited speakers are encouraged to contact conference organizers with questions about accommodations in the area.
