The Heidelberg Center for American Studies (HCA) invites applications from international PhD students for its fifth annual HCA Spring Academy conference on American History, Culture, and Politics. The conference will take place in Heidelberg from April 21 to April 25, 2008.
We encourage applicants pursuing interdisciplinary projects. Papers can be presented on any subject relating to the study of the United States of America. Possible topics include American identity, transatlantic relations, U.S. foreign policy, gender, literature, issues of ethnicity, as well as different aspects of American history, religion, and culture.
Participants are requested to prepare a 20-minute presentation of their research project, which will be followed by a 40-minute discussion. Presentations will be arranged thematically in ten panel groups.
The HCA Spring Academy will also provide participants with the opportunity to work with experts in their fields of study. For this purpose, four workshops held by American visiting professors will be offered during the conference week.
The application deadline is December 31, 2007. For more information, please visit our website at www.springacademy.de or www.hca.uni-heidelberg.de
