The University Library in Poznań will host the conference "Culture of memory in East Central Europe in the late Middle Ages" on March 12-14, 2008, in Ciążeń near Poznań.
The aim of the conference is to discuss and analyse various aspects and issues of the culture of memory in central and eastern Europe of the Middle Ages and early modern times and to attempt to explain why culture of memory was so important exactly at that time when access to information and knowledge and the processes of their retrieval and searching had become far more easy due to mechanical printing of books followed by new methods of indexing, pagination schemes, or registering printed books? Another question to be addressed during the conference is what the mutual relation of the book as an object of cultural memory to widely used mnemotechnical processes known at the time is and how this relation takes shape.
