The Dublin Seminar for New England Folklife is pleased to announce the subject of its next annual conference, NEW ENGLAND AND THE CARIBBEAN, to be held in June 2008. The Seminar is accepting proposals for papers on all aspects of New England’s involvement with the West Indies and the Caribbean basin in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. This interdisciplinary conference will focus on the mutual interaction of these regions primarily in the areas of trade, social engagements, cultural exchanges, intellectual and political crosscurrents, material culture, and maritime life.
Specific topics may include slavery and the slave trade, religion, migration, kinship patterns, multiracial relationships, medicine, education, environmental history, and trade in horses, livestock, fish, and other commodities or products. The conference also encourages papers on clothing and fashion, foodways, architecture, furniture and the decorative arts, visual and literary depictions, language, music, and folklore.
