The University of Queensland’s School of Languages and Comparative Cultural Studies invites you to participate in the School’s annual postgraduate conference Rhizomes – designed by and for postgraduate students and early career researchers. The aim of Rhizomes is to provide an opportunity for scholars working within the Humanities and Social Sciences to engage in interdisciplinary dialogue about the theme: Power Violence Language. The conference encourages the elaboration of varied perspectives on one or more of the theme areas in order to explore the connections, continuities and discontinuities that intersect the concepts and practices of power, violence and language.
We welcome scholars to submit abstracts which explore the themes:
- Causes and impacts of political, cultural or structural violence
- Legitimation of violence in language
- Representations of power and violence in visual media
- Linguistic imperialism
- Violence in literature
- Representations of power or violence in film
- Any other topic exploring the theme: power violence language
Format
Presentations are to be no longer than twenty minutes (with ten additional minutes for questions). Panels will be grouped by topic and will feature three speakers per panel. The conference committee also welcomes submissions for panels.
Call for Papers Deadline – 1 November 2007
Submissions should include your name, institutional affiliation, the title of the paper, and an abstract of no more than 250 words (with relevant keywords also listed), accompanied by a short 50 – 100 word biography about you and your research interests.
