Light! Camera! Action!
The National Archives-Great Lakes Region, Chicago, invites the public to attend its forthcoming Cinema in the Stacks Film Series. This free film series will focus on three Hollywood movies that relate to records held in the National Archives-Great Lakes Region, Chicago.
Dr. Stephen C. Shafer, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Cinema Studies Unit, will introduce and discuss each film. Original records in the National Archives-Great Lakes Region relating to each film will be displayed.
Film Schedule
1. Tucker: The Man and His Dream
When: 7:00 P.M. Thursday, September 20, 2007
Come join Dr. Stephen C. Shafer for a discussion on the film Tucker: The Man and his Dream. Dr. Shafer will discuss the film from the perspective of a film historian while Archives staff Glenn Longacre and Gabe Geer will discuss the archival records on Preston Tucker and his company held by the Great Lakes Region. The program will conclude with a screening of the 1988 film by Francis Ford Coppola and a display of archival records related to Tucker and the Tucker Torpedo. This is a free event open to the public. Continuing education credits are available for teachers who attend the program.
2. The Great White Hope
When: 7:00 P.M. Thursday, October 18, 2007
Come join Dr. Stephen C. Shafer for a discussion on the film The Great White Hope. Dr. Shafer will discuss the film from the perspective of a film historian while Archives staff Glenn Longacre and Gabe Geer will discuss the Great Lakes Region's archival records on Jack Johnson's conviction and subsequent appeal in Chicago's Federal courts. The program will conclude with a screening of the 1970 film by Martin Ritt and a display of archival records related to Jack Johnson. This is a free event open to the public. Continuing education credits are available for teachers who attend the program.
3. Anatomy of a Murder
7:00 P.M. Thursday, November 15, 2007
Come join Dr. Stephen C. Shafer for a discussion on the film Anatomy of a Murder. Dr. Shafer will discuss the film from the perspective of a film historian while Archives staff Glenn Longacre and Gabe Geer will discuss the archival records connected to the film held by the Great Lakes Region. The program will conclude with a screening of the 1959 film by Otto Preminger and a display of archival records related to the libel case heard in Federal court in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This is a free event open to the public. Continuing education credits are available for teachers who attend the program.
