Constructing and Deconstructing Resistance in the Philippines: Centennial
Legacies of Macario Sakay

The organizers hope that a wide range of papers relating to Philippine history will be offered, with preference given to topics focused on resistance and/or the Philippine-American War. We invite scholars, graduate students, and activists to submit proposals for papers, readings, and workshops. Proposals for full panels are especially welcomed. Deadline for proposals is 1 October.
The keynote speaker will be Dr. Rico Jose from the University of the Philippines, Diliman.
The goal of this conference is to recognize the centennial of General Macario Sakay’s death. Sakay’s resistance to Spanish and American colonial rule has produced parallel frameworks of analysis where his legacy as Filipino freedom fighter emerges in conflict with his execution as a criminal by U.S. forces in 1907. In the past century, Filipino resistance has been variously constructed and deconstructed, and the anniversary Sakay’s death offers an opportunity to revisit these historical sites of contestation.
