Bilingual conference. University of Stirling, GB – June 25th - 27th 2008)
Building on the interest and the success generated by Hypervisibility I (Montreal, June 2006), Hypervisibility II will take place from June 25th to 27th at the University of Stirling (GB).
While maintaining a focus on the general theme of Hypervisibility I (representations of homosexualities in contemporary francophone feature films and television productions), we would like to broaden the field of research to encompass other aspects of contemporary Francophone visual cultures (music video, experimental videos, comic strips, advertisements etc.).
We suggest the following list of themes for papers/sessions:
Analysis of specific films;
Examinations of the work of individual directors;
Queer narratives e.g. ‘Coming out’;
Families;
Bisexualities;
Transgender, transsexual and transvestite voices and images;
Homophobia, self-hatred;
Representation of AIDS / people with AIDS;
AIDS narratives;
Cross-dressing;
Homosexuality and popular cinema / genres;
Queer voices and images across ethnic, racial, cultural and class difference;
Critical reception, censorship.
Abstracts on other relevant topics will also be considered.
Abstracts of 200-300 words, along with a brief biographical summary, should be sent to Cristina Johnston (cristina.johnston@stir.ac.uk) or Florian Grandena (florian.grandena@uottawa.ca) in either French or English by 1 December 2007.
Keynote speakers: Lucille Cairns (Durham University, GB), Jean-Pierre Simard (Université Jean Monnet – Saint-Étienne, France), Denis Provencher (University of Maryland, USA).
Organizers: Cristina Johnston (University of Stirling, GB) and Florian Grandena (University of Ottawa, Canada).
