I am searching for two fellow panelists (and a commentator or moderator) for a session at the SHA Meeting in New Orleans, October 9-12, 2008. The panel would examine the Civil War and Reconstruction (and the memory of these events) in New Orleans. My paper would look at the construction of Civil War Memory through John Bell Hood and how he used his participation in charitable endeavors within the city to help deal with his own failure in military command. While papers could deal with specific events in New Orleans dealing with the Civil War and Reconstruction, I would like to be able for the panel to examine notions of race, gender, class, memory or anything else appropriate to the period. If you are interested, please email me a paper title, short paper description and a CV by August 30. I will stay in touch and take care of the paperwork to propose the session. Thank you!
