The Science Fiction and Fantasy (SF/F) Area of the Popular Culture Association solicits your proposals for its 2008 national conference. The goal of our area is to share and support research and to mentor emerging scholars, so we invite proposals from professors, independent scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates (with the guidance of a professor). As always, we welcome any topic related to SF/F from any theoretical/disciplinary approach. However, our host city provides an opportunity to consider two special topics.
As scholars and fans know, San Francisco has a unique place in SF/F. Among many others, it is the setting for the TV series _Charmed_ (1998-2006)—the longest running show with all female leads; for Phillip K. Dick’s novel _Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?_ (1968), loosely adapted to film as _Blade Runner_ (1982); for the classic film _It Came From Beneath the Sea_ (1955); and for the more recent _Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home_ (1986). It is difficult, of course, to think of such cult series, novels, and films without thinking of their fans. Because of this rich history of SF/F entertainment and fandom, we are particularly interested in proposals that address fan cultures and the importance of place in SF/F.
Submission Guidelines: In Word (.doc/.docx), Rich Text Format (.rtf), or PDF, completed papers or 250-word proposals for individual papers, panels, roundtables, or workshops should be submitted to Tanya Cochran at . The document should contain the following information in this order:
• Name(s) of presenter(s)—indicate main contact person if submitting a group presentation
• Institutional affiliation—if applicable
• Name and contact information of cooperating professor—undergraduates only
• Address(es), telephone number(s), and email address(es) of presenter(s)
• Title(s) of paper(s), panel, roundtable, or workshop
• Completed paper(s) or 250-word proposal(s)—if submitting a workshop, please specifically indicate what those in attendance will gain
We will acknowledge a paper/proposal upon receipt and notify the sender of its status no later than December 2007.

Each year after the last conference panel on Saturday evening, the SF/F Area hosts a fundraising event that includes a movie, snacks, and a prize raffle of DVDs, novels, academic books, etc.—hundreds of dollars in merchandise. Come enjoy the fun!
