Anthony Stanonis of Queen's University Belfast and Kristen Vogel of Texas A&M University are organizing a panel for the 2008 Southern Historical Association conference in New Orleans. We are searching for a third participant whose work relates in some way to our session theme: "‘Colored Folks Work While De White Folks Play’: Waterscapes as Racial Borderlands of the American South." Kristen Vogel will present a paper entitled "Urbanity Afloat: Segregation on Steamboats in Nineteenth Century America." Anthony Stanonis will present a paper entitled "Black and Tan: Leisure and Jim Crow in Southern Beach Towns, 1915-1980." Any topic on any period of southern history that addresses the role of water (for instance in regard to fishing, travel, literature, religion, etc.) in southern culture will be considered. Persons interested in joining the session should please email a paper title, paper description of approximately 150 words, and a one-page CV to Anthony Stanonis (anthonystanonis@aol.com) by September 7th. Please feel free to email if you have any questions.
