Proposals are being sought for a reading book on television dating and makeover shows. The intent of the book—tentatively titled “Rate Me, Date Me, Remake Me”—is to compare these two reality television genres, focusing primarily on their cultural implications and/or their ideological impact.
All methodologies are welcome. Proposals may focus on one or several television series within a genre or on the genre as a whole.
Topics might include (but are not limited to):
Genre analysis
Cultural/ideological significance
Similarities between the two genres
The rating process implicit in both genres
Nature of fan base
The construction of gender
Standards of beauty
The equation of appearance and happiness
Parody of a genre
Parody of societal standards
Portrayal of male/female relationships
Send 500-word proposals, plus a CV, by September 15 to Dr. Judith Lancioni at lancioni@rowan.edu. Please send your proposal as an MS Word attachment. Finished articles will be due December 15.
