The Faculty of Economic Sciences at the Georg-August-University Göttingen offers a newly designed MA programme in Economic and Social History. It takes two years (4 semesters) and leads to the degree “Master of Science”. Applications for starting in October 2007 are invited now. The application deadline is July 15th. A good working knowledge of the German language is necessary. Courses are mainly taught in German.
The programme is coordinated and managed by the Institute for Economic and Social History (Prof. Dr. Hartmut Berghoff) in cooperation with the Faculty of Economic Sciences and the Department for Medieval and Modern History. It is intended for graduates of Bachelor programmes in history, economics, management and pertinent programs in social sciences or cultural studies.
Economic and Social History analyses the imprinting of our presence by economic and social developments of the past. The programme provides an overview over the basic trends of economic and social development in the 19th and 20th centuries. It traces the transformation from the age of mercantilism to the era of industrialization and the emergence of modern societies. Special emphasis is laid on business history, the history of consumption and the history of globalisation. In its methodological and thematic approach, economic and social history is an interface between history, economics and social sciences. Therefore interdisciplinary courses are a core element of the MA programme.
There is a great variety of job opportunities for graduates. It includes careers in publishing, in archives and museums. The master degree also qualifies for public management, business journalism, public relations, consulting or marketing.
The MA programme already involves practical knowledge by internships and other forms of cooperation with companies, archives, museums, foundations and research institutions.
Enrolment is possible in summer and winter semester. Applications will be accepted from December 1st to January 15th for the summer semester and from June 1st to July 15th for the winter semester. An online-application form is available on the website of the Faculty of Economic Sciences: www.uni-goettingen.de/de/sh/23170.html. The online-application procedure is mandatory.
