The second biannual joint Society for Court Studies / Victorian Society conference on Courts and Capitals 1815-1914 will take place from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday 29 September 2007 at the Wallace Collection, Manchester Square, London W1. The nineteenth century was one of the great eras of court culture and architectural patronage on a grand scale. Royal courts made huge contributions to cities and their planning but this has not received the attention it deserves. This conference highlights recent research and will shed new light on the influence of royal courts on the architecture and culture of some of the world's great cities. It is intended to publish the proceedings in a special number of The Court Historian. The speakers at the conference, which is being organised by Steven Brindle and Philip Mansel, will include: Emmanuel Ducamp on "Saint Petersburg and the Romanovs: The Second Phase"; Roderick J. Barman on "The Imperial City as Bourgeois Triumph: The Making of Petrópolis, 'Summer Capital' of the Brazilian Empire, 1842-1889"; Terry Kirk on "Reconfiguring Rome: The Remaking of the Capital of United Italy after 1870"; Giles MacDonogh on "Nothing Too Colossal, Nothing Too Expensive: Berlin under Wilhelm II"; John Hamilton on "False Starts and Failed Hopes: The Rise and Fall of Royal Sofia (1878 – 1946)"; and Gavin Stamp on "Budapest: A Dual Capital for the Dual Monarchy".
